Ground conductivity surveys

Ground conductivity surveys are also referred to as electro-magnetic (EM) surveys due to the utilised method of surveying. An instrument will generate an EM field at the surface and measure the response from the ground as it propagates through the subsurface. Similar to most non-destructive surveys the instrument comprises of an emitter, in this instance a metal coil to generate a primary EM field, and a receiver coil which measures the induced secondary EM field.

The instruments are either carried by hand or transported on the back of a vehicle over a set grid to measure the ground response. The type of survey instrument used will depend on the penetration depth required for the survey. Survey instruments are predominantly supplied with GPS equipment which enables the data to be relocated to the exact locations when downloaded to the field computer for analysis.
